An American group led by businessman, Todd Boley, has reached an agreement to acquire Chelsea Football Club in a deal worth $5.2 billion.

And the “Wall Street Journal” reported that this astronomical figure represents the highest value in a deal to sell a professional sports team.

The speed of the potential deal would surpass the $2.4 billion 2020 acquisition of the New York Mets baseball club by billionaire Stephen A. Cohen, as the largest ever paid for a professional sports team.

Who is Todd Polly?

The Wall Street Journal reported that Polly, the former head of financial firm Guggenheim Partners who now runs Eldridge Industries, made a bid in 2019 to buy Chelsea, but was turned down after the price fell below $3 billion. The Russian owner was the Russian owner. Roman Abramovich seeks it out.

Polly’s fortune, through a series of investments in all sectors, is estimated at $4.5 billion, according to Forbes magazine, which ranks him 627th on the list of the richest person in the world.

The 46-year-old Polly graduated from the London School of Economics and spent his early career at Citibank and Credit Suisse First Boston.

In 2001, he moved to Guggenheim Partners where he launched the company’s trust investment business and took over as President.

In 2013, he struck a deal between Time Warner Cable and the Los Angeles Dodgers to create a sports network called Sportsnet LA to broadcast the Los Angeles Dodgers’ MLS matches.
